Research

Space research started early in Norway, first with observations of the Aurora before 1900 and then with the building of a solar observatory in 1950.

Modern space research began in 1962 with the first launch of an Aurora research rocket from Andøya. Since then, Norwegian scientists have worked on many space projects, most entailing studies of the Sun and of the ways in which the interplay of the Sun and the Earth’s magnetic field affect near Earth space.

The geographical advantage of a location under the Aurora and an early entry into solar physics have directed most Norwegian space science toward Sun-Earth research, though some scientists study the origin and evolution of the Universe. This focus on a few scientific areas is appropriate for a small country of limited means.

There’s more to space research than explaining the Universe. Climate systems, ocean currents and tectonic movements are best examined through Earth observation from orbiting satellites, a field in which Norway has made significant contributions.

Satellites and the space station orbiting the Earth are in free fall and consequently permit conducting research in weightless environments. Studies in weightlessness help further the understanding of phenomena observed on Earth, including plant growth, crystal formation and combustion. Norwegian scientists are active in international research groups dealing with these topics.

Most Norwegian research involving space is conducted within the framework of ESA co-operation, but the country also works together with the USA, Canada and Japan.
