The Global Positioning System now has 24 satellites in orbit. At Norway’s high latitude, most GPS satellites appear on the southern horizon.

This means that a user in the shadow of a mountain, in a narrow fjord or in a city street, might receive GPS poorly and consequently either experience low accuracy or perhaps get no positional information.

The European Galileo project, however, scheduled to be operational in 2008, will have 30 satellites, so users in Norway can receive from more satellites, which will improve accuracy.
