ESA commitments in satellite communications

In satellite communications, ESA aims to strengthen the competitive ability of the private sector in Europe, by being on the leading edge of research and development and by forging partnerships in industry.

ESA’s telecommunications programme is divided in elements, within its Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems (ARTES), a set of budgetary rules and regulations that permits research and development at various technical and economic levels.

ARTES is divided into programme lines that cover the principal strategic sectors:

  • Programme development
  • Technology
  • User segment
  • Interactive multimedia
  • Mobility
  • Large Platform Mission
  • In-orbit demonstrations
  • Inter-satellite Links (ISL) demonstration
